FYP with Monica Hynds: Career Advice from The Experts

With the job market in Singapore already so competitive, even small shifts in the global economy hit harder than expected. That’s why thoughtful career advice from the experts feels more valuable than ever.

Alhamdulillah, I had the chance to attend FYP (For Your Passion), hosted by Monica Hynds. It’s a chill fireside chat on Sunday evening. An honest, heart-to-heart conversations about building a career, especially for those of us just getting started in the Singapore workforce.

This was the second edition of FYP, and it felt extra special. Monica brought in some pretty big names. We’re talking about Ambassador Suryo PratomoOlivia Marzuki (yes, Olivia Marzuki from CNA), and Baskoro Adi, who leads a major Indonesian investment bank right here in Singapore and a celebrity, Lullaboy.

Here are my three biggest takeaways, career advice from the experts:

1. Keep learning. Always.
No matter where you are in your journey, stay curious. Be that person who’s not afraid to ask questions. Google things. Ask ChatGPT things. Or even take a masterclass. The moment you stop learning is the moment you start falling behind.

2. Be a solution, not a spectator.
It’s not just about showing up. It’s about contributing. Bring ideas, energy, and a problem-solving mindset. Think like a durian seller, hands scratched and sore from the thorns, but still focused on delivering the sweetest fruit to their customers. That’s real dedication.

3. Your personal brand matters.
It’s not just for influencers and YouTubers. Your vibe, your voice, and how you show up all shape how people see you. Build a reputation that speaks for you, even before you say a word.

That Sunday evening really hit different. Like someone pressed refresh on my mindset. And the best part? I got to connect with fellow Indonesians who are also finding their path in Singapore. We shared stories, swapped tips, and reminded each other that we’re not alone in this journey.
