Book, Coffee, and Quiet: Singapore’s Silent Reading Book Club

I have been on the lookout for a silent book reading activity in Singapore ever since my session with Hestia at IdeaFest 2023 left me inspired.

And guess what? I finally found one. Maktaba Books Club Singapore hosts exactly this kind of gathering, and I recently joined them. If I am not mistaken, they started in late 2024, and so far, it seems to be going really well.

The concept is simple: dedicate an hour to just sit and read, whether it is one book or a few.

What makes it even better for me is that these sessions happen at Penny University, a cozy café that serves a halal menu. That means I can sip on a good coffee, enjoy a snack, and fully immerse myself in my book without any worries.

Another thing I love is meeting fellow book lovers. Listening to them share their thoughts on different books is both fascinating and inspiring. Some of their recommendations have made it to my to-read list, while others are just nice to know about. I also get to share my own reading experiences, which helps me organize my thoughts, especially when expressing myself in English.

For me, this is all about building small habits, reading consistently, and improving my speaking skills. Who knows? Maybe dedicating an hour each week to this will finally help me tackle my ever-growing stack of books I bought but never finished.
