Sama Sama Book Club had a lively book discussion at the National Library Singapore last Sunday, February 23rd, 2025. We dived into Safiyyah’s War by Hiba Noor Khan, a gripping story set in World War II Paris, told through the eyes of a brave young muslim girl.
I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. The author’s choice of words? Absolutely elegant. The suspense? Had me feeling all sorts of emotions in real life. Also, fun fact: this might just be the first fiction book I’ve read this year… or ever.
During our discussion, we all agreed that Safiyyah’s bravery and curiosity to stand up for what’s right were truly inspiring. We also touched on the theme of friendship, which got me thinking, people come and go, and that’s just life. A little bittersweet, but hey, that’s what makes stories (and reality) so compelling.
One theme that really stood out to me was the role of the Grand Mosque as a safe space. It wasn’t just a place of worship, but also a center for learning and a refuge for those in need. It’s a beautiful reminder of how sacred spaces can be more than just buildings, they can be lifelines.
