Don’t Believe Everything You Think by Joseph Nguyen introduces an interesting concept on how to tame overthinking.
I have to admit, I’m an overthinker. Reading this book felt like a lightbulb and Deja Vu moment, helping me understand how to manage my thoughts. Right from the start, Nguyen lays things out systematically across 15 chapters, explaining how the mind works and how to work with it rather than against it. His practical explanations are easy to digest, making the book accessible even for a layman.
In each chapter, he unpacks overthinking through his own experiences, weaving in stories and folklore like one about a monk that illustrates his points. One key takeaway is when he says, “… stop fighting with the mind and begin trying to understand it.” That is the starting point.
Honestly, this book is a page-turner. I found myself whispering, “Uhm, my counselors have told me this before. I kept questioning it, and now I see it in this book. The same concept. Should I finally believe it?”
I will leave that as a rhetorical question for myself. But if you struggle with overthinking, I would recommend reading this even before considering counseling.
