Vietnam Moved Faster on AI Law

Since I have a bit more time to read and reflect lately 😅, I found myself thinking about why Vietnam 🇻🇳 moved faster on AI regulation than its neighbours.
According to The Straits Times, Vietnam officially implemented the first comprehensive AI law in Southeast Asia on 1 March 2026. This is not just a guideline or an ethics paper. It is a formal law. A serious one.

The law classifies AI systems by risk levels, requires transparency for AI-generated content, and clearly defines the responsibilities of technology providers.

Now compare that with other countries in the region.

Indonesia🇮🇩, whose digital economy is projected to exceed USD 130 billion by 2025 according to a joint study by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, has so far released ethical guidelines on AI, but not a binding law.

Singapore🇸🇬 has taken a different approach. Rather than introducing a single AI law, it has focused heavily on research and development. According to Reuters, the government has committed around USD 780 million through 2030 to strengthen AI capabilities, particularly in ethical AI and talent development.

Back to Vietnam.

I remember when I was involved in expanding offering from my previous company that I work into Vietnam. One piece of advice I have always kept in mind is this: when evaluating a market, pay close attention to where policy and capital move together.

From a strategic standpoint, this move feels deliberate.

Vietnam is sending a clear signal that it intends to grow aggressively, but with structure. By regulating AI systems and mandating content transparency, it is defining how intelligence is created, distributed, and governed within its economy.

This is not just about technology. It is about digital sovereignty as an economic strategy.

In emerging markets, clarity reduces risk. And reduced risk attracts serious investment.

Whoah.. this thinking is taking up much of my energy today. I think I will buka puasa with Pho 🍜 later!
